BRIDGEPORT - The presence of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Connecticut continues to grow - physical presence that is. Following construction of a new FBI building in downtown New Haven, now the Fairfield County G-men have outgrown their headquarters on State Street in Bridgeport.
FBI officials say the staff at the Bridgeport office has more than doubled in just the past two years. Also, many of the high-profile cases the FBI is investigating involve enormous amounts of paperwork and records, which create storage problems.
One of those cases involves alleged racketeering and fraud by Martin Frankel of Greenwich; another involves possible municipal corruption in the Park City. Finally, the lease on the current State Street building expires this spring.
Officials say the federal General Services Administration (GSA), which secures office space for federal agencies, has advertised for a new FBI space, but has not yet located a site. Bridgeport FBI officials estimate they need an additional 11,000 square feet.
