Pelli to Design Yale
Engineering Building

Yale University has named architect Cesar Pelli to design a new engineering building near the corner of Prospect and Trumbull streets in New Haven. The approximately 55,000-square-foot building will house portions of Yale's revitalized programs in engineering and applied science, focusing on high-technology laboratory space for biomedical, chemical and mechanical engineering.

According to a Yale spokesperson, major funding for the project comes from John Malone, Yale class of 1963, who recently donated $24 million to his alma mater. Chairman and CEO of Tele-Communications Inc. until last year, when it merged with AT&T, Malone now serves as a director of the company. The new engineering building is part of an unprecedented investment in science and technology of more than $500 million announced by Yale earlier this year.

Pelli, who established Cesar Pelli & Associates in New Haven in 1977, has designed other Yale projects including: the Boyer Center for Molecular Medicine at 133 Cedar Street (which earned a design award from the Connecticut chapter of the American Institute of Architects); the Yale University Press renovation and Evans wing at 302 Temple Street; and the William K. Lanman Jr. Center at Payne Whitney Gymnasium. Pelli was dean of the Yale University School of Architecture until 1984, and continues to lecture on architecture of Yale.
