WESTPORT - IMS Health (NYSE: RX) this month reported that global retail sales of diabetes drugs through pharmacies topped $8.1 billion for the 12 months ending September 30, a 19-percent rise over the prior 12-month period. Oral antidiabetics - the principal category of drugs used to treat diabetes - accounted for 63 percent, or $5.1 billion, of worldwide retail sales during this period. Insulin, the other major drug category for diabetes treatment, comprised the remainder of sales. IMS Health provides information solutions to the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries.
In worldwide physician research on disease trends and treatments, we've seen a substantial increase in the number of people diagnosed with type II diabetes,'' said Karan Middleton, IMS' group marketing manager. Doctors attribute the rise to a number of factors, including the increased prevalence of obesity due to sedentary lifestyle, poor dietary habits, aging populations and new and stricter diagnostic criteria.''
There are an estimated 135 million diabetes sufferers in the world today. Type II diabetes (also known as adult-onset diabetes) accounts for about 90 percent of all diabetes cases worldwide. With the number of diabetes cases mounting globally, IMS projects the retail market for diabetes medications to exceed $20 billion annually by 2006.
