Blumenthal Seeks Penalty Hikes for Health-Care Fraud

HARTFORD - Attorney General Richard Blumenthal has asked the legislative Judiciary Committee to increase Connecticut's standards of culpability and penalties for health-care fraud to match existing federal laws.
Blumenthal also asked for increase state invetigative authority to combat health-care fraud. Blumenthal says that the cost of health-care fraud in Connecticut is $1.5 billion annually, and that ten percent to as much as 40 percent of all medical expenses involve fraud, costing between $1,600 and $6,000 per family of four in Connecticut each year.
