NEW HAVEN - The city of New Haven is working with local businesses to rehabilitate storefronts in the lower Chapel Street retail district. The $1 million program is intended potentially to benefit some 70 retail establishments. Sassy, a beauty shop located at 800 Chapel Street, was the first to complete the storefront renovation, at a cost of $3,000. The city is providing $15,000 per retailer for façade renovations; an additional $15,000 is available to owners in matching grants. Also, a $1,500 grant is available for design costs for new facades.
To date, designs for 28 storefronts are in the planning stages; construction on several of these is planned for the spring. City officials hope that revitalization of storefronts will encourage investment in a more attractive downtown.
