BRIDGEPORT - Leaders of the Bridgeport Regional Business Council (BRBC) have urged state Transportation Commissioner James Sullivan and the Governor's Transportation Advisory Board to conduct a thorough economic impact study along Connecticut's coastal corridor before closing on-ramps to ease rush-hour traffic.
A February 5 letter to Sullivan signed by BRBC President and CEO Paul Timpanelli, Chairman Philip Kuchma and board Vice Chair Richard Schmidt suggests such a study may even support the addition of new ramps along the congested stretch of I-95 between Greenwich and New Haven.
We recommend that any permanent decision with regard to ramp closures, or even additions, be made after a thorough economic impact analysis is complete, the letter states.
According to Timpanelli, the state should use the study results to target ramp closures that would have little or no economic impact to the area they serve. We hope that such a study will also shed more light on opportunities for the state DOT to enhance regional economic development by perhaps adding new ramps where appropriate, Timpanelli said.
