Netkey Inc. of Branford, which provides software solutions for Web-enabled kiosks, announced February 12 that it had closed a second round of funding for $9.5 million.

The investment syndicate was led by Hudson Ventures Partners of New York, which invested $3 million. Co-investors included Zero Stage Capital of Cambridge, Mass. ($3 million), Fleet Development Ventures of Boston ($2 million), and Connecticut Innovations Inc. (CII, $1.5 million).

The funding will be used to expand Netkey's software product line and customer-support operations. The company will also said it will launch a global sales and marketing campaign to increase market share.

“Netkey is well-positioned to capitalize on the Internet's tremendous potential for providing improved customer service,” said CII President and Executive Director Victor R. Budnick. “In addition, Netkey's market leadership and its ability to attract significant venture capital underscore Connecticut's growing reputation as a global center of technology innovation.”

Concurrent with the funding announcement, Netkey announced that it had expanded its board of directors to include Glen S. Lewy of Hudson Ventures and Jennifer S. Schmelter of Fleet Development Ventures. Lewy joined Hudson Ventures last year as senior managing director. Schmelter is vice president of private equity investments at Fleet Development Ventures, responsible for private equity investments focusing on both early-stage technology companies and consumer/retail-related firms.

“As the leader in kiosk-management software, Netkey's pioneering products have helped to create a new industry,” said Lewy. “Web kiosks are now recognized as a critical component of a successful multi-channel market strategy in a variety of industries. Netkey software has become the industry's standard technology for building and managing kiosk networks, and we're excited to be a part of its growth.”
