Downtown New Haven restaurants are taking advantage of the trend toward health consciousness in general, and February's designation as American Heart Month in particular, to promote their own healthy fare. Yale-New Haven Hospital, in partnership with area health departments and Roche Pharmaceuticals, has published a brochure of local restaurants that offer healthy options to their customers.
Restaurants are rated heart-healthy based on ten criteria, including their ability to accommodate special dietary requests, offerings of low- or no-fat salad dressings, providing condiments on the side, and enforcing nonsmoking rules. Featured restaurants include Zinc, the Union League Café, Roomba and Claire's Corner Copia.
James Rawlings, executive director of community health at Yale-New Haven Hospital, is hopeful that the Guide To Healthy Dining will be used as a compass by a growing number of health-conscious New Haven residents and visitors. We hope that other restaurants get on the bandwagon and make their heart-healthy options available to consumers, says Rawlings, adding that the brochure is the first in a series of initiatives designed to help prevent heart disease.
