The New Haven-based Aristotle Corp., which makes medical and computer-based training products, has formed a partnership with Quinnipiac University Online to offer continuing education courses for health-care professionals. The classes, which will provide continuing medical education (CME) credits, will be offered through a separate company being formed and owned jointly by Aristotle and Quinnipiac's online affiliate.

"We believe that our computer-based training expertise combined with Quinnipiac's distinguished health-care faculty will create a powerful company that can obtain a significant share of the growing online training market," said John J. Crawford, chairman and CEO of Aristotle.

"With this partnership, our Safe Passage International subsidiary can blend its proven computer training techniques with Quinnipiac's sophisticated health care content to present a convenient on-line solution that allows busy health-care professionals to meet their continuing education needs."

Added Richard Ferguson, Quinnipiac's vice president and chief information and technology officer: "Our university has clearly identified a need among its allied health-care graduates for an innovative online solution to fulfill their CME requirements. Our faculty's impressive knowledge base in conjunction with the expertise of medical professionals will be made available through computer-based CME courses over the Internet to provide our alumni, as well as hundreds of thousands of other allied health-care professionals, with the opportunity to receive quality training through an interactive program."

The first two courses under development are expected to be available this summer and will be provided to physician's assistants, who number approximately 38,000 nationwide. Future courses are being considered for nurse practitioners, of whom there are about 70,000 nationally, and respiratory therapists, who number some 120,000.

Founded in 1986, Aristotle is a holding company with two subsidiaries. Safe Passage International Inc. develops and distributes computer-based training products to government, industry and academic clients, including Web-based continuing education.

Simulaids Inc. designs, manufactures and markets health and medical education teaching aids, such as manikins and simulation kits used for training in CPR, emergency rescue and patient care by institutions such as fire departments and medical schools. Over the past 12 months Aristotle reported combined sales of about $7 million.
