The state's Department of Economic & Community Development (DECD) has modified its method of reporting housing permit activity.
For the first time DECD has compiled the information by labor market area (LMA) instead of by county, to be consistent with how other economic indicators are reported. Those wishing permit data by counties can still obtain that information by request.
The number of new housing units authorized for November show a slow-down in the industry. According to DECD, 863 new housing units were authorized for November, a 15.6-percent decrease from November 1999 when 1,023 units were authorized.
Although the November units also represented an 11.2-percent increase over October's 776 units, year to date permits are down 14.1 percent from 10,146 through November 1999, to 8,713 through November 2000.
The Hartford LMA reported the largest number of new authorized units in November, with 310. New Haven followed with 190 units. Madison led all Connecticut communities with 108 units, followed by Danbury with 47 and Southington with 25.
