BRANFORD - Neurogen Corp. (NASDAQ: NRGN), a drug-discovery and -development company, earlier this month announced an extension of the funded research portion of its GABA collaboration with Pfizer Inc. The objective of the collaboration is to discover and develop drugs to treat three discrete diseases - anxiety disorders, Alzheimer's disease and insomnia - by exploiting Neurogen's expertise in the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) neurotransmitter system. The GABA system modulates communications between neurons in areas of the brain associated with these diseases.
The extension represents the fifth extension of funding from Pfizer to support GABA research at Neurogen since the collaboration began in 1992. This extends Pfizer's financial commitment to fund this work by $2.9 million, which Neurogen will receive over the course of this calendar year.
