The Connecticut Minority Supplier Development Council (CMSDC) and New Haven State Sen. Toni N. Harp (D-10) held a December 20 press conference at the state Capitol to highlight contributions to the Connecticut economy by minority-owned businesses.
We represent 208 minority business enterprises throughout Connecticut, many [of which] have broken the barriers to success, said Elaine Thomas-Williams, executive director of the CMSDC. Minority business enterprises have contributed more than a billion dollars to the Connecticut economy over the last year. We've added a great deal to the state's surplus and continuing prosperity.
While we are having great success, Thomas-Williams added, there are many minority businesses that are not receiving the contract opportunities necessary for growth. Our goal at this press conference is to advocate minority business success by leveling the playing field.
The CMSDC is a 24-year-old, non-profit affiliate of the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC). Members include local and national Fortune 500 corporations, government agencies, universities, financial institutions, associations and organizations. The organization provides services to members and certified minority business enterprises (MBEs).
