NEW HAVEN - Gov. John G. Rowland and Mayor John DeStefano Jr. were joined by state and municipal transportation officials for the December 19 groundbreaking for the State Street Railroad Station, the first project of the I-95 New Haven Harbor Crossing Corridor Improvement Program.
The 12-year, $680 million infrastructure program includes construction of a new Pearl Harbor Memorial Bridge over the Quinnipiac River. The new rail station, it is hoped, will encourage more commuters to use Shore Line East service and provide an alternative to single-car occupancy during and following construction.
In conjunction with the New Haven construction, improvements are likewise slated for Shore Line East rail stations in Branford, Guilford, Madison, Clinton and Westbrook. These include additional parking, new high-level passenger platforms and increased service frequency.
