CID AWARDS The Best & Brightest of 2000

New Haven CID singles out superlatives among commercial and investment real-estate deals

New Haven Board of Realtors meets at year's end to take sum of the previous 12 months and honor achievements of distinction, large and small.

Last year 26 commercial and industrial property brokers were cited for excellence in 16 categories, including sales, leases and all manner of transactions brokered across the entire CID spectrum. New award categories this year included Most Unusual Sale (see below) and largest Biotechnology Lease, which went to OR&L Realtors' Frank Hird and Rich Lee for a $900,000 deal for 14,000 square feet at 36 East Industrial Road in Branford - a transaction local and state economic-development officials hope is but a harbinger of bigger deals to come.

The December 13 CID fete at 500 Blake Street Café was also marked by the awarding of Business New Haven's sixth annual Community Service Award, which recognizes a CID member who has served her or his industry and the community with distinction over the previous 12 months.

BNH Editor Michael C. Bingham, who presented the award to Levey Miller Maretz broker Bill Silverman, praised the New Haven CID for its members' ability to work together across company lines.

“You could be out there cutting each others' throats,” Bingham observed. “Instead you cooperate, share information, work together to solve problems and in general comport yourselves in a manner that those of us outside your industry admire and respect. That's true community service.”

CID award-winners not pictured included:

Most Unusual Sale - Levey Miller Maretz broker Bernie Diana sold a property at 1067 North Colony Road in Wallingford. The deal, worth $1.7 million, included tax credits for preserving an historic structure.

Land Sale - Levey Miller Maretz' Bob Blank snagged honors for largest land deal: a 65,500-foot pad site in Germantown (Md.) Town Center, which went for a cool $4.1 million.

Industrial Sale - Lynn Weed of Weed Realtors shared plaudits with the Geenty Group's Timothy McMahon and Kristin Geenty on the $2,975,000 sale of 85,000 square feet at 80 Defco Park Road in North Haven.

Office Lease - Traub & Co.'s John Friedlander and Carl Traub leased 20,000 square feet at 157 Church Street in New Haven (the Connecticut Financial Center) to Metaserver Inc. for $5,820,000.

Biotechnology Lease - OR&L Realtors' Frank Hird and Rich Lee leased 14,000 square feet at 36 East Industrial Road in Branford for $900,000.

Chairman's Award - Shared by Elizabeth Brochin and John Tischio of the Beazley Co. with Colonial Properties' Mike Richetelli and Gene Caso for the $2.1 million sale of a 26,000-square-foot church on 5.5 acres at 129 Bull Hill Lane in West Haven.
