Farace’s Market Sold

Business New Haven
1/8/2001
By: Priscilla Searles
ORANGE - Farace's Market, a fixture in Orange since 1967, is under new management. Run by Phyllis Farace and her son Richard since the death a number of years ago of Gerald Farace, the business has been a family operation for three generations. For most Orange residents, the “user friendly” atmosphere is something customers have come to take for granted. At Farace's, everyone knows the customers by their first names.

The new owners, who bought the business on December 4, are determine to keep up the tradition, starting with the fact that it will continue to be a family operation, having been purchased by Ramesh Patel, his daughter Sneha and son Akshay. Patel has always been involved in a family business. A grocer for 30 years, for the last 12 he was owner of the Wooster Street Market in Shelton.

What does the future hold for Farace's? For starters, the name will remain the same. If you're worried that the meat department won't know exactly what you want, it will continue to be staffed by the same personnel. Patel has made it clear that all the familiar faces will remain on the scene. Home deliveries, a service Farace's has provided for years at a very nominal charge, will also remain available. As to those “home cooked” food items that Phyllis Farace made, she will continue to provide the Italian specialties as she has for years.

Patel makes it clear that the things that have made Farace's so popular will remain high on his priority list. “Everything will remain the same, nothing will change,” he says. “Our goal is to provide the best service we can and if there are any changes it will be to try to improve the services.”

As to the reasons for the sale, the Faraces aren't saying. But in an interview in August 1999, Richard Farace pointed out that his days began at 5:30 a.m. and lasted until 7 p.m. - six days a week. “I spend more time here than at home. And things happen - then the hours are longer.” Perhaps that has something to do with the sale.
