NEW HAVEN - For those accustomed to avoiding the Crown Street Parking Garage because it was dark, dirty and unsafe-looking, fear not. A $600,000 upgrade, nearing completion, has transformed the once-dreary six-story structure into a utterly new environment. The renovation began with a lighting and electrical upgrade. Walls have been painted navy and white and new striped lines define the facility's 720 parking spaces.
Another project presently being tackled by the New Haven Parking Authority is the $9 renovation of the Temple Street Garage and the installation of $70,000 in new revenue control equipment, including ticket spitters, gates, electric cash registers and key cards at each of the authority's facilities. When completed, the Temple Street Garage will hold 1,247 vehicles.
If you're wondering how many vehicles New Haven can accommodate for parking, there are approximately 12,000 enclosed spaces in 32 lots, some of which are privately owned. The Traffic & Parking Department manages 2,000 on-street metered parking spaces. And for those of us who have done battle with the meters (eating our money and not registering), the department is replacing dated quarters-only metered with electronic three-coin meters. So far, 50 have been replaced, allowing drivers to buy four minutes for a nickel, six and a half minutes for a dime and 20 minutes for a quarter.
