SHELTON - It's been 227 years since the Boston Tea Party, and 224 years since Americans said no mas to King George and his cronies. Now, however, they seem to have re-acquired a taste for the motherland's tea. To satisfy Americans' changing palate, Tetley USA has gone British.
On December 1 Tetley USA announced that it had upgraded its original blend hot tea, sold on these shores since 1888, with its classic blend - a higher quality mixture of orange pekoe and pekoe black cut teas identical to the blend sold by Tetley's parent company in the UK. Sold in Great Britain for more than 150 years, that blend has made Tetley the No. 1 tea brand in the mother country.
The stemmed from a blind taste test Tetley conducted last year pitting the UK blend against its U.S. counterpart. (You can guess which won.) The new Classic Blend, which hits supermarket shelves as we write, is a mixture of teas from northern India, Indonesia and Kenya.
