On November 30, the Yale Microcomputer Sales Center at 175 Whitney Ave. closed its doors for the last time. An online purchasing portal on the Yale server replaced the store. The decision to do away with the MCSC was based on the growing number of Web-based computer orders, Yale officials said. Many students said making the trek to the MCSC was inconvenient, and they instead preferred to purchase computers and software online.
The online Yale computer store, known as an e-portal, can be accessed at www.yale.edu/eportal. There students can purchase everything from laptops and Palm Pilots to ethernet cards and scanners. The MCSC carries Dell, Apple, Hewlett-Packard and IBM computers, all at reduced prices. In addition to purchasing computers and software at the MCSC Web site, students and faculty can make online travel reservations, book flights, make hotel reservations, reserve rental cars and find help in choosing accommodations.
