WEST HAVEN - If your kid is the only one on the block without a scooter, you may be the only parent on the block who isn't hearing complaints about knee pain, shin splits (a pain that runs along the shinbone) and back woes. Not to mention the bumpy, bloody messes that accompany a tumble off those speedy fadmobiles.
With scooters, just like with skateboards and Rollerblades, riders need to take the proper precautions to avoid an injury or accident, warns Laurie Kendall-Ellis, president of Allied Health Rehabilitation, a rehabilitation facility.
Protective gear is an absolute must, she says. This includes a padded helmet, knee and elbow pads, and wrist guards. These scooters are so fast that any spill will likely result in considerable force on any part of the body that absorbs the fall, she notes.
Stretching is also important to strengthen muscles used for riding, Kendall-Ellis adds. A strong, flexible body will tolerate exertion and the inevitable spills.
