NEW HAVEN - Downtown property-owners earlier this month voted to reauthorize the Town Green Special Services, even though a key element of its original mission - marketing downtown - has been usurped by the creation of Market New Haven Inc. (see related story, page 8). According to City Clerk Stanley L. Rogers, 76 percent of the district's 398 property-owners voted on November 13 to continue to fund the district through a special tax levy. Town Green was created three years ago to make downtown cleaner and safer and to market downtown attractions and merchants. It has produced a Downtown Guide to shops, restaurants and attractions, and last year kicked off a fair-weather Do Downtown series of weekly public performances, many at lunchtime. Earlier this year, presumably to exercise firmer control over the marketing message, the city, Yale and the Regional Leadership Council moved to form and fund a new marketing corporation. That means downtown property-owners paying for Town Green's continued existence will have to be content with clean and safe.
