HAMDEN - A November 13 fundraiser at the Eli Whitney Museum netted some $14,500 for the Women in Transition program of Charter Oak State College and the American Association of University Women's Educational Foundation.
The programs seek to reduce the so-called digital divide between women and technology as well as offer opportunities for women in transition - especially single mothers - to complete a college degree online.
Based in New Britain, Charter Oak State is Connecticut's virtual college, offering an array of ways for adults to earn college credits, including testing, contract learning and distance-learning courses offered by Charter Oak and other Connecticut colleges and universities.
Students in the Women in Transition program receive a laptop, printer and Internet access to online courses and to communicate with academic advisors and fellow students. The program is a three-year statewide initiative with a goal of 40 students in the first year and an additional 40 in years two and three. Information about the WIT program is available by calling 860-832-3860.
Also at the November 13 event, Charter Oak and the AAUW recognized three leaders in math, science and technology education for women and girls. They were: Janice J. Gruendel, co-founder and executive director of Connecticut Voices for Children; Robert A. Rosenbaum, professor emeritus of mathematics at Wesleyan University; and Ann S. Pollina, head of the Westover School and director of the Westover/Rensselaer Women in Science & Engineering (WISE) program.
