NAUGATUCK - B2BPKG.com, an Internet-based marketplace for the packaging industry due to launch early next year, has created a 15-member advisory group of packaging-industry leaders. Meeting recently in Greenwich, group members reported significant potential for the Internet in monitoring the status of orders. But they observed that, for now, the Internet is being used mostly to obtain information - not products.
The panel agreed that Internet business-to-business portals hold more potential for dispersing information about products, orders and shipping than for actual buying.
This is a small but prestigious group of people, says Robert Lerman, CEO of B2BPKG.com. Much of what they told us confirms trends others are seeing in Internet portals.
For instance, group member Michael Carstens of Sunstar Pharmaceuticals believes that, Procurement is years away through Internet portals. But the important thing is information, information, information. I'll know at 6:30 in the morning who I'll need to be talking to.
B2BPKG.com will aggregate packaging vendors' data and make that information available to the packaging industry. Currently, the company's Web site offers a directory of manufacturers and forums for discussing packaging-related issues.
