Era Ends at NHSB

Battling cancer, CEO Terrell steps down

Business New Haven
11/13/2000
By: BNH
New Haven Savings Bank President and Chief Executive Officer Charles L. Terrell retired from the bank effective November 1.

The announcement regarding the much-respected Terrell, who has battled cancer since late summer, came from New Haven Savings Interim Chairman Richard J. Grossi. Grossi returned to work following his own retirement from the top spot at the United Illuminating Co. to help fill the leadership void when it became known the seriousness of Terrell's illness.

NHSB directors have begun to search for a successor to Terrell, Grossi said. Until a successor is found, Grossi will remain as interim chairman. Kenneth Kaminsky, executive vice president and chief operating officer of the bank, will continue to serve as interim president and chief executive officer while the search for a successor continues.

“Charlie will be missed,” Grossi said. “He was a loyal and competent leader of the bank and the community it serves for many years. He was instrumental in successfully guiding the bank through turbulent days of the early 1990s.”

Terrell was diagnosed with brain cancer this summer and underwent surgery in early August. For a brief period in late August and September, Terrell was well enough to come into the bank to work several days a week, according to those close to him at the bank.

On October 18 he was honored by the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce's annual Community Leadership award, but was not well enough to attend the event in person.

“The outpouring of support from that award speaks more succinctly than any words I can suggest of the high regard that we all have for Charlie and his service to the community,” Grossi said.

In 1999, Business New Haven named Terrell its Citizen of the Year.

Terrell worked at the bank for 34 years, rising through the ranks to become its president in 1989. Three years later, he was named chief executive officer's title. In 1998 Terrell was named to chair the bank's board of directors.
