State awards $750,000 for local brownfields clean-up

The state's Department of Economic & Community Development (DECD) has awarded $750,000 to fund a brownfields site-remediation program run by the New Haven-based Regional Growth Partnership (RGP).

This is the second round of funding by DECD for the brownfields program, which seeks to make contaminated industry sites productive once again. The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven is also funding the program to the tune of $70,000.

“For communities formerly reliant on manufacturing, nothing is more important to the transition to new winds of economic activity than the reuse of brownfields,” said Community Foundation President William W. Ginsberg.

The RGP program seeks to provide grants and loans to eligible municipalities, non-profits and individuals to remove environmental barriers to development of targeted sites.

The announcement was made at a former brownfields site now occupied by EZ Form Cable at 275, 285 and 295 Welton Street in Hamden. The company increased employment from 45 to more than 100 employees as part of the expansion. The company provides parts to the fast growing wireless communications industry.

The, grant funds were used to conduct tests that determined the levels of ground and water contamination. As a consequence, the property seller removed existing underground tanks while EZ Form Cable contributed to site clean-up and building renovation. The town of Hamden also assisted through the state urban jobs program and by providing infrastructure grants and improvements.

EZ Form Cable, which manufactures and assembles coaxial cable, employed 45 workers when it moved to Hamden in June. Today, according to RGP, it has more than 100 employees.

An earlier DECD grant to the program of $575,000 is earmarked to fund Phase I and II environmental investigations in six communities. To date, 21 sites in Branford, New Haven, East Haven, Meriden and Hamden have benefited from the program, say RGP officials.
