Regina Burkhart, publisher of Hometown Publications, has been named chairman of the board of directors of the southeastern Fairfield County chapter of the American Red Cross. Burkhart, who resides in Shelton, has been a director for three years, most recently serving as a vice president. She said that her focus as chairman will be to help the chapter “maintain and improve emergency services and volunteer efforts, promote healthier, safer communities through our class offerings, and advance development efforts so we can continue to help those in need.”

Donna Summers, owner of the Balance Center, is the new president of the Stratford chapter of Business Network International. Vice president is Regina Mead of Nikon. Secretary/treasurer is Rob Lesko of DiMatteo Insurance Agency, educator coordinator is Thomas Crivellone of Strategic Products and Services, and the publicity chairperson is Harriet Haggerty, owner of Shamrock Financial Services.

Dean James Gustave Speth of the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies has been named to a new international committee on sustainable development. Speth was invited to join the Coordinating Committee for the Transition to Sustainability by the U.S. National Academies. The committee's task is to provide the academies with advice on how to use the full potential of the scientific and technical communities to exert creative leadership through national and international experiments in pursuit of a successful transition to sustainability.

KGA Advertising of Middletown has promoted five employees: Liz Shaw, recently named media coordinator; Michael Summer, now a vice president; Debra Durkin, who becomes account coordinator; Debra Roccapriore, new media supervisor; and Carolyn Hart, now an account manager.

Vine M. Samuels has been named prevention specialist at the South Central Connecticut Regional Action Council (SCCRAC). Samuels is a graduate of the SUNY/New Paltz and earned a master's in public health at Southern Connecticut State University. She comes to SCCRAC from the City of Bridgeport health department, where she managed grant-funded programs and contracts.

Stamford-based Immedient Corp. has named Michael D. Madden a director. A general partner in Questor Management Co., Madden is former vice chairman of PaineWebber Inc., where he led the firm's global investment banking group.

The Connecticut Press Club has elected new officers for 2000-2001. Juliette Weiland of Wilton becomes president. Others are: Treasurer Frank Scott of Scott American Corp.; Program Chair Ian Kerr, chairman of Emmanual Kerr Kilsby; Awards Contest Chair Stacy Lytwyn Maxwell, freelance writer and Web site editor; Doris Skutch, director of communications/grants for Regional Youth/Adult Substance Abuse Project; Stacy Enyeart, freelance portrait writer; Tom Finch, business writer and author; Patricia McCormack, editor, journalist and columnist; and Marguerite Vauelair, marketing and corporate communications.

Brian Condon of Cheshire has been named president of the National Kidney Foundation of Connecticut. Condon is senior vice president of clinical administration at Yale-New Haven Hospital. He was vice chairman of the NKF this past fiscal year. Condon is an executive committee member of the New England Organ Bank and also serves on the board for the Connecticut Student Loan Foundation.

Maria K. Scanlon has joined Webster Bank of Waterbury as lending officer with Webster Financial Advisors. Scanlon will provide loan, mortgage and deposit services. She previously held several positions in the private banking and installment finance divisions of FleetBoston Financial Corp. Scanlon earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Central Connecticut State University, and a master's in business administration from Sacred Heart University.

Also at Webster Financial, Nancy Vendetti has joined Webster Trust as a vice president and trust officer with Webster Financial Advisors. She will provide trust and estate services to Webster Financial Advisors clients in greater New Haven. Previously Vendetti held trust, private banking and estate-planning positions at BankBoston. She holds a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Connecticut and a master's in education from Western Connecticut State University.

Raymond Lamontagne of Wilton has been appointed chairman of the Hole in the Wall Camp board of directors. A member of the board since 1988, Lamontagne and his family have been volunteers at the camp for many years. Founded by Paul Newman, the camp each year serves more than 900 children, ages seven to 15, afflicted with cancer, sickle-cell anemia, HIV/AIDS and other blood diseases. Lamontagne is retired president of Seavest Inc., an investment banking firm.

Kevin Eastwood has joined the staff of Achillion Pharmaceuticals Inc. Previously manager of business development for Agouron Pharmaceuticals, Eastwood is a graduate of Southwest Missouri State University with a major in biology/chemistry. He brings more than 12 years experience in pharmaceutical sales, marketing, account management and business development to Achillion, which was founded in February 2000 as the largest biotech startup in history. The company concentrates on the discovery and development of anti-viral therapies.

Douglas H. Teeson, superintendent of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, has been appointed president and director of Mystic Seaport. He succeeds J. Revell Carr, who will retire at year's end after spending 23 of his more than 30 years at Mystic Seaport as CEO. Teeson will continue to serve as superintendent of the academy until his retirement from the Coast Guard next June, when he will assume his position at Mystic Seaport. A 1965 graduate of the academy, he holds master's degrees in ocean engineering from the University of Rhode Island and in management science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Sloan Fellows program. Prior to assuming his duties as academy superintendent in 1997, he attended Harvard University's Institute for the Management of Lifelong Education.

Terry T. Terzakis of Milford has joined Campbell Mortgage as a loan officer. Terzakis was graduated from Southern Connecticut State University and holds a master's in stage management from the Yale School of Drama. He has served as stage manager at the Westport Country Playhouse, Goodspeed Opera House, Stage West in Springfield, Mass. and, most recently, at Long Wharf Theater.
