In the year 2000 Medicare celebrates its 35th anniversary. Here are some notable milestones:
July 30, 1965: Medicare is enacted.
1966: Medicare is first implemented. More than 19 million Americans are enrolled on July 1.
1972: Medicare coverage is extended to cover the disabled and those with permanent kidney failure.
1977: The Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) is established to administer the Medicare and Medicaid programs.
1980: Medicare supplemental insurance, also called Medigap, is brought under federal oversight.
1982: Medicare begins contracting with HMOs on a risk-basis. Hospice benefits for the terminally ill are enacted.
1997: Medicare + Choice, a new array of choices for beneficiaries, is established.
1998: Internet Web site is launched.
1999: Medicare's toll-free telephone number becomes available nationwide (800-MEDICARE:800-633-4227).
2000: Medicare serves 39 million seniors and disabled Americans.
By 2030, it is estimated, Medicare will serve 77 million Americans.
