NEW HAVEN - The New Haven Colony Historical Society will present its 2000 Seal of the City award to Yale University on October 24. The award, which honors Yale's tercentennial, is given in recognition of Yale's contributions to the improvement of the greater New Haven community over the last 300 years. Says Peter Thomas Lamothe, NHCHS executive director, “The Historical Society applauds the many significant contributions Yale University has made to the greater New Haven community over the past 300 years. Yale has been a leader and supporter of a great number of local initiatives and events, both publicly and quietly behind the scenes.” Mayor John DeStefano Jr. will present the award to Yale President Richard C. Levin. U.S. Sen. Joseph I. Leiberman will be the keynote speaker and Robert Leeney, editor emeritus of the New Haven Register, will emcee. Tickets to the event, to be held at the Yale Commons, are $150.

The Seal of the City award was established in 1992 to honor a person or institution whose activities or ideas have significantly enhanced the quality of life, prosperity or general improvement of the New Haven area. Past recipients include Mayor Richard C. Lee, the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce, Robert J. Leeney, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Townshend, Elizabeth Kubler, Julia McNamara, F. Patrick McFadden Jr. and Mr. and Mrs. Fenmore Seton. Proceeds of the event will support the NHCHS' education programs for students and teachers in New Haven public schools. For particulars, call 203-562-4183.
