DERBY - Residents of the Naugatuck River Valley are planning a Columbus Day weekend celebration for October 6 through October 8. The three-day event is being sponsored by the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, the Katherine Matthies Foundation, the Iroquois Gas Transmission System and radio stations WICC-AM and WEBE-FM. Residents of the seven Valley towns (Ansonia, Beacon Falls, Derby, Naugatuck, Oxford, Seymour and Shelton) will have an opportunity to attend more than 50 events on land and waters on the Housatonic and Naugatuck Rivers. Activities include photo and art exhibits, a crafts fair, tours, canoeing, kayaking and rafting, a farmer's market and a battle of the bands.
Each day a featured entertainer will be in the spotlight. The Jazz Haven Ensemble and singer Giacomo Gates will perform on October 6 at the Royale on Route 34 in Derby from 7 to 10 p.m. The Shirelles will have top billing at two free concerts October 7 on the Derby Green during the two-day Taste & Talent of the Valley. The group will perform at 7 and 9 p.m. The celebration will culminate with a performance by singer Al Martino on October 8, 7 p.m. at Shelton High School. Many of the events are free.
