Matthew Barry Smith has been appointed executive director of the new Entrepreneurship & Small Business Management Institute at Quinnipiac University. Smith began his career co-authoring the first federally funded HMO feasibility study. He has worked at GTE Corp. and Technician Corp., established CompreMedx Cancer Centers Corp., co-owned Kramex Corp. and co-founded Health Excel Management Inc. Smith has been on the faculty of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University and the Quinnipiac University School of Business. He holds bachelor's and MBA degrees from Boston University.

Trustees of Teikyo Post University in Waterbury have elected Jon Jay DeTemple president of the university. With 25 years' experience in higher education, DeTemple will focus on academic excellence, alumni and community relations, new programs, distance education, faculty and staff development, and institutional advancement. DeTemple earned his Ph.D. and M.B.A. degrees from Syracuse University and a bachelor's degree from Cornell University, and was a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army.

Richard K. Snyder has rejoined the law firm of Tyler, Cooper & Alcorn, LLP as counsel in the New Haven office. He was previously with the firm from 1964 through 1981. He will rejoin the firm's corporate practice, in the trusts and estates area. Snyder is an elected fellow of the American College of Trust & Estate Counsel, serves on the executive committee of the Estates & Probate Section of the Connecticut Bar Association and the executive committee of the New Haven County Bar Association. Snyder was graduated from the University of Michigan in 1957 with a B.S. in English and earned his J.D. from its law school in 1963. Tyler, Cooper & Alcorn has also hired Gerald T. Giaimo as associate. Giaimo will maintain his civil and criminal litigation practice in the New Haven office.

M. Scott Salka has been named president and CEO of 454 Corporation, a majority-owned technology subsidiary of CuraGen Corp. of New Haven. Salka was previously president and CEO of Arcaris Inc., where he facilitated company growth from 14 to 50 employees and oversaw construction of a state-of-the-art research laboratory. He has also held various financial and management positions at companies including Burroughs Corp. and B.F. Goodrich. Scott received his B.S. in finance from San Diego State University and his M.B.A. from Carnegie Mellon University.

Paul A. Fleury has been named dean of engineering at Yale University, succeeding D. Allan Bromley. Fleury, most recently dean of engineering at the University of New Mexico, is an award-winning scientist and engineer who has served in top-level research and executive positions in industry, government and academia for the past three decades. Fleury is a member of both the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Sciences.

DATTCO Inc. has named Dominic Butanowicz general manager of sales and service. A University of Bridgeport graduate in business administration and a former Navy radarman, Butanowicz worked for International Harvester and Navistar International for 33 years in a variety of positions, most recently as dealer operations manager.

Susan M. Dzubiak has been promoted to procurement supervisor at the Wallingford facility of Cytec Industries. Dzubiak joined Cytec in 1995 as accounts-payable clerk and has also worked as purchasing coordinator and assistant buyer.

Blaine Kruger of New Haven has been named public relations associate in charge of publications at Housatonic Community College in Bridgeport. He will be responsible for the design and production of the college catalogue, class schedules, advertising and other marketing materials. He was previously senior art director at Premier Electronics in Sandy Hook. Kruger, who has extensive experience in the creation and preparation of advertising and marketing materials, also served in the U.S. Army, producing and supervising production of propaganda materials. He holds a B.A. in art from North Dakota State University.

Four associates have joined Carmody & Torrance, LLP of Waterbury: Pamela Levin Costa, David T. Payne, Anne D. Peterson and Alexander G. Snyder. Costa was administrator of the Department of Cell Biology and the Department of Microbial Pathogenesis at the Yale University School of Medicine before joining the C&T's litigation group. She received her law degree from the Quinnipiac University School of Law in May. Payne, a member of the law firm's business services group, was an associate at a Birmingham, Ala. law firm before joining C&T. He earned a law degree from Washington & Lee University School of Law in 1996. A member of the firm's litigation group, Peterson received a law degree from the University of Connecticut Law School in 1998 and a B.A. from Bates College. Snyder was judicial clerk for Barry R. Schaller of the Connecticut Appellate Court before joining C&T's litigation group. He was graduated from Quinnipiac College School of Law in 1999.

Gerald Rosenberg and Nathaniel D. Woodson have been elected to New Haven Savings Bank's board of directors. Also, Rolan J. Young was appointed to serve on the Board of Directors of NHSB Community Development Corporation. Rosenberg is senior vice president and general manager of Bayer Corp. in West Haven, where he has held various sales and marketing positions since 1971. He is currently responsible for the operation of Pharma USA, which includes all of the ethical pharmaceutical U.S. business, as well as sales and marketing responsibility for biological domestic business. Woodson is chairman, president and chief executive officer of the United Illuminating Co. He holds a bachelor of engineering degree in mechanical engineering from Yale University, a master's degree in nuclear engineering from MIT, and an MBA from University of Pittsburgh. Young is a senior associate attorney, practicing with the firm of Updike, Kelly & Spellacy, where she concentrates in the areas of public law/public finance, real estate and affordable housing and community development.

Nurse practitioner Judy Lynch of Ear, Nose, Throat & Facial Plastic Surgery Associates in Fairfield and Trumbull was named one of 21 charter fellows of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners in Washington, D.C. She is a member of the clinical faculty at the Yale University School of Nursing.


Robert Alvine, chairman and chief executive officer of
I-Ten Management Corp. and AIM Capital, has been elected chairman of the Board of Governors of the University of New Haven. A UNH governor since 1998, Alvine previously headed Charterhouse Group International, Uniroyal Inc. and the Celanese Corp. A resident of Woodbridge, Alvine was graduated from Rutgers University and earned graduate degrees from the Harvard Business School and Syracuse University.


Dolores Guarino has been named clinical manager of Milford Hospital's new Center for Aesthetic Care & Cosmetic Surgery. Guarino has worked for cosmetic/plastic surgeons in New Haven and Westport and has extensive experience with skin-care programs and microdermabrasion procedures.
Matthew F. Mentone has been named marketing associate/event coordinator at Autotote Enterprises Inc. and will be responsible for the group sales of Autotote's simulcast facilities, Sports Haven in New Haven and the Bradley Teletheater in Windsor Locks. Mentone previously worked in customer service at Sports Haven.

Diane L. Wishnafski, executive vice president and chief lending officer at New Haven Savings Bank, and Joseph A. Zaccagnino, president and chief executive officer of Yale-New Haven Hospital and its parent corporation, the Yale-New Haven Health System, have been named honorary co-chairs of the 13th annual Lender Family/Quinnipiac University Heartfest, which benefits the American Heart Association. In addition to the American Heart Association, Wishnafski is also active in the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce, American Red Cross of South Central Connecticut, Community Foundation for Women & Girls and Hamden Hall Country School Days. Zaccagnino serves on the board of the VHA, National Committee for Quality Health Care, New Haven Regional Leadership Council and New Haven Savings Bank.



Ginny LaBoudy has been promoted to development assistant for the Saint Raphael Foundation. She will be responsible for coordinating the annual giving program, which includes special events, the annual fund and memorial/tribute program. LaBoudy joined the hospital in 1997 as a dietetic technician and most recently was annual giving secretary for its foundation.

Also at the Saint Raphael Foundation, John Bossidy has been hired as planned-giving coordinator, developing and marketing a range of planned-giving vehicles including annuities, trusts, bequests and gifts of life insurance. Bossidy will also coordinate public and professional programs and seminars on estate planning and the tax benefits of charitable giving. Bossidy has been employed by the Hospital of Saint Raphael' since 1985, and most recently held a position in the department of radiology as manager of clinical operations.
