NEW HAVEN - Unhappy with the performance of a Pennsylvania construction contractor on the renovation of the Branford residential college, Yale University has cancelled the firm's $30 million to $40 million contract for the Saybrook College renovation, which is more than a month behind schedule. According to the Yale Daily News, Barclay White Inc. had been slated to perform construction work on both Branford and Saybrook, which are adjacent and share some plumbing, dining, electrical and communications systems. Barclay White will finish the Branford job, but Yale has hired the politically connected Fusco Corp. to take over the Saybrook renovation. Fusco is co-developer (with the Newton, Mass.-based New England Development) of the proposed retail mall at Long Wharf. It has also worked on Yale projects in the past. Fusco Corp. did a great job on the delivery of Swing Space and Payne Whitney Gym on time, Yale President Richard C. Levin told the YDN. Because of their complexity, the Branford and Saybrook projects are expected to be the most expensive of Yale's residential-college renovations, together costing some $100 million.
