Amy Meyers has been named director of the Yale University Center for British Art and a professor of art history. She will serve as director for a term of five years beginning September 1. She is presently curator of American art at the Henry E. Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, Calif. After earning her B.A. from the University of Chicago, Meyers did doctoral work in American studies at Yale. Since then she has spent most of her time at research institutions, first as a graduate fellow at Dumbarton Oaks, then at the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts at the national Galley, and for the past 13 years at the Huntington.
Webster Financial Corp., holding company for Webster Bank, has named Nicholas Perna as economic advisor. Perna will assist Webster in assessing state, national and international economic developments. Perna is chief economist and managing director of Perna Associates, a consulting firm that specializes in economic analysis, forecasting and strategy.
People's Bank has named Barbara P. Johnson senior vice president for strategic community relations. Johnson previously served as senior vice president and manager of Insurance Services at People's. A career banker with 26 years of financial experience, she is a graduate of the National School of Banking.
Walter L. Mullen of Milford has been named coordinator of assessment and academic research at Quinnipiac University. He will work with deans, department heads and faculty to oversee curricular assessment efforts, especially in the area of general education. Mullen holds a bachelor's degree from Duke University, a master's from the University of Illinois and attended the Yale School of Management. He previously worked at Yale and Roosevelt University in Chicago.
The Greater New Haven Convention & Visitors Bureau has elected two new directors. Representing Shelton is Kevin Lewicki, appointed by Mayor Mark Lauretti, while Nancy Ciarleglio, appointed by Mayor Richard Borer, represents West Haven. Lewicki is general manager of the AmeriSuites Hotel in Shelton; Ciarleglio is retired from the state's Judicial Department.
Elizabeth P. Conrad has been named vice president of human resources for the Saint Raphael Healthcare System. She will be responsible for the direction and oversight of all HR initiatives and programs, including employee relations, staff recruitment, training and development and salary and benefits programs. Conrad previously served as vice president of HR at Monogalia Healthcare System in Morgantown, W.V. and was principal of her own firm in Portland, Me.
DNE Technologies, a provider of voice/data solutions, has named Stephen Roy as manager for the Western region. He will focus on Department of Defense markets, including military and prime contractors in the region, and deployed units in the Pacific Rim. A graduate of the Control Data Institute in Detroit with a degree in computer technology, Roy previously served as federal account manager for Nortel Networks.
John D. Allen of Branford has been named program director of employment services for Marrakech Inc. Allen spent 12 years at Easter Seals/Goodwill Industries in New Haven and has 25 years of experience in sales. Based in Woodbridge, Marrakech is a non-profit corporation serving people with mental, economic, physical and psychiatric barriers.
The Hopkins Committee of Trustees has named Barbara Masters Riley the 109th head of Hopkins School. Riley is the first woman to lead this institution since its founding in 1660 on the New Haven Green. She has been serving as interim head of school since last July. A 1973 graduate of Yale College, Riley holds an M.S. and M.Ph. in American studies from Yale. She joined the Hopkins history faculty in 1996 after having taught English and history at the Foote School for five years.
Stephen T. Birkmeyer of Killingworth has been appointed head golf professional at Wallingford Country Club. The University of Connecticut graduate is a Class A PGA member and was nominated for Connecticut Section PGA Assistant Golf Professional of the Year in 2000 and 2001. He previously served as assistant golf pro at the New Haven Country Club and was head golf coach at the University of New Haven.
William T. Kosturko, executive vice president and general counsel for People's Bank, has been presented the bank's Samuel W. Hawley Award. The award was established in 1983 to honor Hawley, a former president and chief executive officer of the bank. Kosturko received the demonstrating the qualities of community service and citizenship that exemplify Hawley's career.
Calcagni Associates has announced that Sarah Andrea has rejoined the firm. She began her career with Calcagni in 1994 as an associate. A graduate of Albertus Magnus College with a bachelor's degree in business, economics and finance, Andrea has since earned the GRI designation, awarded to individuals who have completed classes in contract law, appraisal, finance and marketing. She also holds a Certified General Real Estate Appraiser License with experience in both residential and commercial evaluation. She will work in the company's Cheshire office.
The U. S. Department of Education's Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention has announced that Albert Salonen, president of the University of Bridgeport, has been selected to serve on the President's Leadership Group. The group consists of a body of higher education presidents and chancellors who have declared their commitment to student substance-abuse prevention. Higher-education officials from 31 campuses representing 22 states have now joined in this effort.
