NEW HAVEN - Leslie Mills, owner of Griswold Special Care, a local home-care company, loves New Haven - and recently had an opportunity to prove it.
When Mills found her Grand Avenue company in need of new quarters, she refused to be seduced by the suburbs.
Still shocked at how fast she was able to find a location in New Haven, Mills says: I had heard horror stories about dealing with city [of New Haven] agencies and went into the whole process expecting a lot of difficulties considering our time frame and specific needs. I was pleasantly surprised when I met with a great deal of helpfulness and cooperation.
It's amazing that we were able to locate, purchase, rehab and physically move the business in such as short time, she says. According to Mills, the entire process took just two months - with a lot of help from local real-estate agents, lawyers, contractors and city officials.
Mills is not shy about why she wanted to stay in New Haven. We love this city, she says. The culture, the neighborhoods, the vitality and diversity are all things we celebrate.
Describing Griswold as a small business, Mills notes that money was a certainly a consideration. But she was able to locate a Tudor building on Sherman Avenue that had been vacant for three years. It proved to be the perfect location.
The project has met with approval from Mills' new neighbors, including the Hospital of Saint Raphael. Says Martha Judd, director of community and government relations, We are delighted that they restored yet maintained the architectural character of the building.
