NEW HAVEN - Researchers at Genaissance Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: GNSC) have identified the first-ever link between gene variants (haplotypes) and asthma drug response, as reported in the September 13 edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Working with colleagues at the University of Cincinnati, the Genaissance scientists were able to establish a clinical association between specific genetic markers and individual response to albuterol, a common asthma medication. The ability to predict a drug response based on an individual's DNA opens the door to the development of so-called “personalized” medicines.
