To help introduce new university employees to local merchants and encourage patronage, Yale has decided to lay its cards on the table.
Or, at least, card. Later this month, Yale will begin an extensive orientation program for new employees among its 7,000-plus workforce. Many of these workers are new not just to Yale, but to New Haven.
To promote town-gown relations, Yale's Learning Center will distribute a value card to new employees along with orientation packets, entitling them to special offers and discounts on dining, retail and entertainment offerings in New Haven.
Last month the Learning Center put out a call to area merchants and restaurateurs inviting their participation. Some 1,500 new employees join Yale each year, so the stakes are significant.
The new-employee orientation sessions will take place on Mondays beginning September 18.
According to the Yale Learning Center's John Vonder Bruegge, his office had received about 30 positive responses from local merchants as of August 28. These included such businesses as Tycoon's restaurant, World Gym, Westville Gourmet Deli, Kinko's and even non-retail businesses. The East Haven office of John Hancock Financial Services, for instance, will offer a free financial consultation to participating new Yale hires.
We really wanted to do something that would benefit both parties - new employees and the businesses, says Vonder Bruegge. We thought if we could offer new employees discounts, that would be a nice welcome to Yale and greater New Haven. And if we can drum up some new business for New Haven merchants, then both parties benefit.
Information about the value card program and participating vendors will be made available on the Learning Center's Web site, www.yale.edu/learningcenter.
