New Haven County led the state in net population loss during the last decade of the 20th century, according to the 2000 U.S. census. Between 1990 and 2000, the county lost 11,385 residents to bring its total population to 793,208 - rendering it Connecticut's third-largest county, following Fairfield (841,334 population) and Hartford (829,671). Statewide, Connecticut posted a net loss of 7,025 residents during the decade. The fastest-growing minority group in the state is Latinos, who are poised to overtake black, non-Hispanic residents as the largest non-white population.
