Tell us about yourself.
I am 18 years old, and I am going to be a senior at Plainville High School this fall. I was born in Plainville, and I've lived there my whole life. Plainville, for those people who don't know, is right next to Bristol in Connecticut, and it's a really small town.
How did you hear about the Pilot Pen contest?
My teacher told me during school last year, my junior year. It wasn't like a mandatory assignment or anything like that, where everyone had to enter. It was voluntary. I just thought I would give it a try.
What classes are you taking this year?
This year coming up I have four art classes: computer art, sculpture, portfolio, and studio AP, which is a class you can get college credit for.
Art is a big part of your plans for the future, then?
Yeah, that is what I want to do with my life in general. I'm not really sure what kind of art I'm most interested in going into. Right now I would say graphic design, but that could change. I'm going to check it out and see how it is, you know. I have to know more about what's involved in the different fields before I decide.
I'm not really sure what school I'm going to go to after high school. I'm going to check out Hartford Art School. There are a couple of other ones, also. I've just looked at the catalogues, I haven't visited the schools yet, so I don't know what's going to happen. I have to get my portfolio together, which is what I am going to work on in my portfolio class this year. That's what you need to apply to art schools: a portfolio.
Tell me about the T-shirt you designed for the contest.
It is pretty much an overhead view of a tennis court. There's a tennis ball in the middle that says '2000.' Then on the right it says 'Pilot,' and on the other side it says 'Pen.' Also, I drew it with Pilot pens. I just sat down and started drawing. I didn't really think about it that much. So I entered it, and then it won. For prizes, I got a $500 scholarship and a free T-shirt.
Did you go to the tournament?
Yes, I went sort of near the beginning of the tournament, before it was halfway through. I don't really remember who I saw. No one really famous, so I don't know the names.
What are some of your plans for the upcoming year?
Well, the previous year I got into a couple of [art] shows. I want to continue with that this year. I want to get into some more shows and just really try to focus on my art in general. I was in one show at the Bushnell [Memorial in Hartford]. I drew these two pairs of eyes - it's kind of hard to explain how I did it - but I made an overhead projector copy of it, and I put it on top and folded it, so they looked like they were in 3-D - so that they looked kind of real. I really just would like to do more of that kind of thing this year. BNH
