It's official: SNET is seeking to get out of the cable TV business. On August 11 the company's Americast subsidiary filed a request with the state's Department of Public Utility Control to discontinue its cable business, perhaps ceasing operations early next year.
Last summer the DPUC found that SNET's current cable offering was commercially impracticable, and granted SNET permission to cease construction of new cable TV lines while continuing to operate in all or part of 26 municipalities statewide.
Instead, SNET plans to offer Digital Broadcast Satellite (DBS) service in Connecticut in conjunction with DirecTV. DBS, more commonly known as satellite TV, has become an increasingly popular video option throughout the U.S. and abroad.
If the DPUC approves the request, SNET Americast customers will receive a credit to help defray the cost of installation of an alternate video service.
