New Rug Store for Post Road
ORANGE - Abbey Carpet has opened at 190 Boston Road. Owned by Jeff Stanger, the store specializes in wall-to-wall carpet, remnants, Orientals and area rugs. Abbey will install and also bind rugs. To make the shopping experience easier on parents, the store provides toys and a play area for children. Abbey is open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m.
New Biz in Milford
MILFORD - The Original Basket Case has opened for business at 58 River Street. Owned by Pat McCarthy, the shop specializes in designer gourmet gift baskets of all sizes, all hand-painted by McCarthy. They are filled with gourmet foods and gifts, and no two are alike. Themes include dinner for two in a basket, Ex Mex, bed and breakfast, aroma therapy, coffee and dessert, anti-stress baskets, baskets for chocolate lovers, coffee, snack attack, and teas. The shop also carries corporate gifts and will help companies develop themes for employee recognition or incentives. Prices for baskets begin at $25. In business for a year and a half out of her house, McCarthy was encouraged to develop a business plan, which she did. My business plan is right on schedule, she says. I gave myself a year and a half to open a store. I also have a Web site [www.orginalbasketcase,com] and people can place e-mail orders. McCarthy will have a grand opening in September, giving shoppers a chance to come in and taste foods from her baskets. The shop is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Styles International, a full-service unisex salon, has opened at 972 Boston Post Road. Owned by Heather Calling and Andrew Tkacs, the salon specializes in haircuts for women, men and children, highlights and foils, color, facial waxing and manicures. We are open long hours to accommodate people who work during the week and can't get to a salon, saus Tkacs. We encourage walk-ins. Styles is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays.
New Bakery-Café in Branford
BRANFORD - The Bread Star Bakery has opened at 1008 Main Street. Owned by Karen Hinman, the shop specializes in breads made on the premises, soups, muffins, scones, sandwiches and coffee. In addition to take-out, the bakery has seating for 30 people. Bread Star Bakery is open Tuesday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Clinton Chamber Concerts
CLINTON - The Clinton Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a series of Smith Barney Concerts summer concerts at the Vece Gazebo at Pierson School on Main Street. The concerts begin a 6:30 p.m. and include: August 10, Long Island Sound, music from the 1940s through the 1990s; August 17, Save the Train, contemporary folk and maritime music; and August 24, Abbey Road, a Beatles show. The concert are free.

MILFORD - The Milford Oyster Festival will take place on Town Green and Fowler Field, Milford on August 19 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Activities include a crafts show, music, children's entertainment and rides, a classic car show, health fair, food court and harbor activities.
