The Connecticut Small & Minority Business Showcase, sponsored by the Secretary of the State's Office, will take place in New Haven on August 31. The corporate sponsor is Citizens Bank.
The event is being run in partnership with a number of businesses and agencies, including the U.S. Small Business Administration, city of New Haven, Gateway Community-Technical College, Business New Haven and many others. The showcase will feature an exhibition of goods and services produced by 83 New Haven-area businesses.
A series of workshops addressing the needs of small and minority businesses will take place throughout the day. Topics will include: starting a business, expanding, loan information, tax tips, business plans, import and export tips, legal tips, e-commerce, contracts and developing business partnerships.
Says Harlan O. Henry, constituent aide for the Secretary of the State and showcase coordinator, This project is designed to bring small and minority businesses together with lending institutions and state agencies that are directly involved in small-business development. We believe that the construction, manufacturing, service and retail businesses should have an opportunity to display their goods, products and services in a setting that allows for a meaningful networking experience. Our theme is 'Small Business Is Big Business.'
Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz, U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro and other officials will make opening remarks. John Carroll of the Essex Group will be keynote speaker.
The showcase will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the U.S. Postal Service facility at 50 Brewery Street in New Haven. In addition to on-site parking, free shuttles will run every half-hour from Citizens Bank, 209 Church Street. Exhibitor registration is $25; admission is free. High school and college students are encouraged to attend. For further information call 860-509-6258.
