Saturday, July 15
10:30 a.m. - Welcome Ceremony and Festival Opening. The schooner La Amistad enters New Haven Harbor and berths in an official nautical ceremony blending traditions of West African and American cultures. Program features dignitaries from the U.S. and Sierra Leone as well as legislative and city officials who will welcome Captain William Pinkney and the Amistad crew to New Haven.
Harry Belafonte, recording artist and movie, Broadway and television star and producer, is guest host of the event. He will be presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by Amistad America for his dedication to civil rights.
11:30 a.m.-5 p.m. - Tours of the Amistad. Entertainment and family activities, exhibits featuring regional corporations, agencies and institutions, multi-ethnic foods, marketplace of wares by local crafts people, interactive exhibits.
11:30 a.m.-5 p.m. - Free tours of the New Haven Freedom Trail will be offered throughout the day featuring sites associated with the underground railroad and the Amistad incident of 1839. Stops at the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History, New Haven Colony Historical Society, Yale University Art Gallery and Chapel Street shopping area. Buses leave and return from the Long Wharf Festival on the hour.
6 p.m. - New Haven Symphony Orchestra concert on the New Haven Green with guest conductor Kay George Roberts featuring works by African-American composers and the choirs from Trinity, Center and United churches on the Green.
8 p.m. - Melba Moore, Tony-award winning singer, actress and philanthropist, in concert with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra. New Haven's Soul Temp will open the concert. On the New Haven Green.
Sunday, July 16
10 a.m.-5 p.m. - Free tours of the Amistad at Long Wharf Pier, New Haven.
2 p.m. - Interfaith Service on New Haven Green with 32 congregations from throughout New Haven in a prayerful tribute to the Amistad.
4 p.m. - Performance of the U.S. Coast Guard Band following Interfaith Service on the Green.
7 p.m. - Amistad Staged Reading, re-enactment of the capture of La Amistad at Long Wharf Theater, 222 Sargent Drive. Free.
