NEW HAVEN - If you are looking for that unusual antique chest, pillars from an historic house or just want your own special antique restored, Lyric Hall is worth a visit. At 963 State Street in New Haven, the shop is owned by John Cavaliere. A restorer, Cavaliere majored in art at Connecticut College, worked at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York then apprenticed with a master restorer. I've been in the restoration business for ten years, says Cavaliere, and I've had numerous requests to start selling vintage pieces or objets d'art. This isn't your run-of-the-mill antiques store; I don't have shelves crammed with collectibles. Architectural details from grand homes of yesterday - such as mantles and columns - are some of my specialties. I'm partial to frames and mirrors. I work a lot with gold leaf. I think everyone has something they love or an heirloom. I'd like to educate them on how to revitalize it. It's all about good design. Pieces that were well conceived have a timelessness about them, but people need to know how to care for those special pieces that need to be preserved. I can't do everything myself, so I work with a lot of local artisans such as a wood-turner, cabinetmaker and someone who works with iron. I'm also going to do consigning as well as market objects on the Internet. Even the sign that hangs above the new store is a restored antique. Lyric Hall is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
