The Boston-based New England Council (NEC) earlier this month issued a report on the impact of arts and culture on the six-state region's economy. The "Creative Economy Initiative," a collaborative effort of the NEC, the New England Foundation for the Arts, the six state arts councils and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, analyzes arts and culture as an economic "cluster," and reveals that: the creative industry employs 245,000 workers region-wide; generates more than $4.4 billion in annual payroll alone; employment in the creative cluster surpasses the number of jobs in several leading industries, including health-care technology, innovation services, and software and communications services. Following a series of state meetings, the "Creative Economy Initiative" will conclude with a strategic blueprint for enhancing and growing the creative industry. More information on the report is available by calling the NEC at 617-723-4009.
