NEW HAVEN - Downtown workers can get a whirlwind history lesson during their lunch hour. Every Thursday at noon through October New Haven First will offer free tours that will provide a glimpse into New Haven's past. Starting at the Yale Visitor Information Center at 149 Elm Street (the former John Pierpont House), the tours will make brief stops at the New Haven Free Public Library, City Hall, the Amistad Memorial and Center Church on the Green, built over a crypt and all that remains of the original burial ground. According to Charles Terrell, president of New Haven Savings Bank, The New Haven First tour is not only an entertaining lunchtime event, but a tool for generating positive energy in downtown New Haven. When people attend the tour - whether they're from out of town or down the street - they find a fascinating, vibrant neighborhood in a city that clearly takes pride in its heritage and has a vision for the future. The tour illustrates the ingenuity that made New Haven an important industrial city, such as the invention of the sulfur match, the corkscrew and (let's not forget) the Frisbee. New Haven First is a collaboration of the Arts Council of Greater New Haven, the city, the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce, New Haven Convention & Visitors Bureau, the International Festival of Arts and Ideas, the New Haven Colony Historical Society, Friends of Hillhouse Avenue, Town Green Special Services District and Yale University.
