NEW HAVEN - DSL.net Inc. has successfully tested the use of both voice service and digital data over the same standard telephone wire, the company announced. The recent test was conducted in New Haven in conjunction with Southern New England Telephone Co. (SNET), a division of SBC Corp.
With this new capability, users will be able to simultaneously receive high-speed DSL (digital subscriber line) service from DSL.net on the same telephone line used for voice service, says a DSL.net spokesperson. However, no date has been set for when this service will be commercially available from the company.
DSL.net is a national provider of high-speed communications and other Internet applications. The company explains that DSL technology allows broadband Internet access that can be 25 times faster than normal dial-up connections. And the sharing of voice and data on the same telephone line will make the service available to more people, with lower installation costs, DSL.net says.
