David H. Levien, M.D., a Philadelphia surgeon and educator, has been named chairman of the Department of Surgery at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport. Levien comes from Episcopal Hospital in Philadelphia, where he was the director of surgery, and Jefferson Medical College, also in Philadelphia, where he was clinical professor of surgery. With expertise in general surgery, critical care and colon and rectal surgery, Levien is certified by the American Board of Surgery in those areas and has earned a certificate of added qualifications in critical care. In addition to authoring Introduction to Surgery, Levien has also edited two textbooks on colon and rectal surgery.
Two leaders in environment and sustainable development will join the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies as McCluskey Fellows. Rajendra Pachauri, executive director of the Tata Energy Research Institute (TERI) in New Delhi, will join the school next year. Over 20 years, Pachauri has built TERI into a leading global institution working in energy, environment, forestry, biotechnology and other fields. He holds doctoral degrees in economics and industrial engineering from North Carolina State University and is the author of 21 books and numerous articles. Wangari Maathai will join the school for the 2001-02 academic year. She is founder and coordinator of the Green Belt Movement in Kenya. Maathai was the first women in East Africa to earn a Ph.D. degree.
Bernard Pellegrino, a partner of the Pellegrino Law Firm, was named the 20th president of the Walter Camp Football Foundation, of which he has been a member since 1988. During the past five years he has served as vice president and president-elect of the foundation. Pellegrino has practiced law in New Haven since 1990. He is a 1985 graduate of the University of Notre Dame and received his J.D., cum laude, from Boston College Law School in 1988.
New Haven Ravens principal owner W. Edward Massey has announced the formation of a senior management team to run the organization. Massey will work with newly appointed vice president for operations Greg Schmidt and vice president for sales and marketing Bill Berger to handle all team-related matters. Schmidt and Berger were elevated from their posts as assistant general managers. In addition, Lori McCarthy has been named assistant general manager for sales and Tamara Nolin assistant general manager for administration and personnel. McCarthy, the team's top salesperson, and Nolin, the club's controller, have worked for the Ravens since the team's inaugural 1994 season.
NCS of Cheshire has named Ernie Williams its new director of sales. Williams is responsible for all direct sales of the company's consulting, software and IT recruitment services. He has held sales, marketing and management positions within the information technology industry since 1977, most recently as principal at ECAL Services. Williams received a B.A. from Amherst College and an M.B.A. in marketing from Washington University.
New Haven Savings Bank has named Matthew L. Nemerson a director of the NHSB Community Development Corp. Nemerson is senior vice president for corporate development at Lexitech Corp. in Branford. Previously, he was president and CEO of the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce for 13 years. Nemerson holds a B.A. in political science from Columbia University and an MPPM degree from the Yale University School of Management.
Elaine Pullen, president of Trident, has been unanimously elected chairperson of the Connecticut Technology Council (CTC). In addition to Pullen, CTC members elected eight executives to its board of directors. Elected to three-year terms: Les Cutler, chancellor & chief S&T business officer, UConn Health Center in Farmington; F. Kevin Didden, president & CEO, CIDRA Corp. of Wallingford); Connie Galley, president & CEO, Mercator Software in Wilton; Marshall Harrison, chairman & CEO, Imperium Solutions, Westport; Louis Hernandez, chief executive officer, OSI of Glastonbury; Frank Marco, partner in the Hartford law firm of Day, Berry & Howard; Leon A. Pinisov of Pitney Bowes in Stamford; and Gualberto Ruano of Genaissance Pharmaceuticals in New Haven.
Sal A. Ardigliano, president and chief operating officer of the Southern Connecticut Gas Co., has been elected a director of the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce. He also was elected to the New Haven Regional Leadership Council. Ardigliano became Southern's president and CEO in February, culminating nearly 30 years of service with the company. He holds a B.S. in mechanical engineering from the University of New Haven and attended the Johnson School of Management at Cornell University.
Community Health Charities of South Central Connecticut has elected the following trustees for the year 2000: Alberta Ferrie, trustee-at-large; Paul Macosky, trustee-at-large; Marge Nelligan, representative of the American Lung Association; James O'Connell, representative of the Alzheimer's Association; and Paul Anderson, representative of the Epilepsy Foundation. The CHC also named officers for the year: William Ianniello, chairman; Howard Kuiper, vice chairman; Charles Fried, vice chairman; Patricia Clark, secretary; Joseph Caldarella, treasurer; and Clarence E. Sawyer, corporate counsel.
James T. Cahill has been named procurement support manager in the Procurement/Supply Chain Department for the Specialty Resins Business at Cytec Industries in Wallingford. His responsibilities include packaging, distribution of chemicals, auto leasing and purchasing related software systems. Cahill joined Cytec in 1989 as purchasing manager for the Wallingford plant, and was promoted to materials manager for the Specialty Resins Business in 1998. He earned a B.S. from Providence College and is a member of the National Association of Purchasing Management.
Marilyn Wilkes has joined Concentrex as marketing manager at the company's e-commerce division in Trumbull. Wilkes is responsible for promoting and marketing software products to help banks across the country with their online banking services. The former marketing manager of SNET's Wireless Division, Wilkes holds a bachelor's degree in mass communication from the University of California/Berkeley, and M.B.A. from the University of New Haven.
Francis L. Onofrio, APR, has been named president of Mason & Madison Public Relations (MMPR), a subsidiary of the New Haven based Mason & Madison, Inc. Mr. Onofrio brings to this newly created position valuable experience from his previous public relations positions with Traveler's Insurance and Aetna. In addition, he is currently serving as president of the Southern Connecticut Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. MMPR was formed in 1999 to serve the growing demand for public relations services. As president, Mr. Onofrio will continue building a stand-alone, full-service public relations specialty company.
