Local Gays Eye Own Business Group

Financial and legal seminar slated to gauge interest

A group of area business people is discussing forming a gay and lesbian business organization. To test the waters and gauge interest, the New Haven Gay & Lesbian Community Center (NHGLCC) is sponsoring a financial seminar for the gay community this month.

"The Power of Pink Money" will cover legal, financial and tax issues specific to Connecticut's gay community. Featuring speakers including Guilford CPA Jody Paviglionite, American Express Certified Financial Planner Camille Gagliardi and Shelton attorney Joseph Rigoglioso, the seminar will take place May 15 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the NHGLCC, 50 Fitch Street, New Haven. Admission is free and open to all.

According to Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce Policy Coordinator Richard DeFlumeri, in the past year a number of area business people had approached then-chamber president Matthew Nemerson about forming a business group to address issues specific to gays and lesbians. Nemerson, according to DeFlumeri, encouraged them to do so under the chamber umbrella.

"The Power of Pink Money" will focus on issues pertaining to all gay adults, not just business people. Gays, especially those in committed relationships, face financial and legal challenges that are resolved for straight couples when they marry - issues including power of attorney, property rights in the death of a partner and even hospital visitation rights.

As more gays create domestic partnerships and combine personal assets, new concerns are raised specific to their relationships and those who advise them. As well, American gays on average enjoy higher income profiles than their heterosexual equivalents.

The three presenting professionals will discuss partnerships, gay adoptions, owning property, portfolio management, assigning beneficiaries and other legal and financial issues. According to DeFlumeri, interest in the seminar may be a springboard to forming some manner of permanent association of gay and lesbian business people.a
