Strike Up the Bands
NEW HAVEN - Town Green Special Services District is planning its second year of lunchtime concerts scheduled to take place in the city's newest pocket park, the Temple Street Plaza. The free one-hour concert series will run six consecutive Thursday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. beginning May 11. The plaza, which links Temple Street with the College Street theater district, will be officially opened by Mayor John DeStefano Jr. May 11. Do Downtown performers will include the Odyssey Brass Quintet, George Baker Experience, the Clam Diggers, Giacomo Gates Jazz Trio, A Broadway Cabaret Experience and Klyph Johnson Jazz Trio. A number of local restaurants will have box lunches for sale. Built as part of the city's Downtown Streetscape Enhancement Project, the Temple Street Plaza features two waterfalls and grassy and paved areas for strolling or sitting. New Biz for Hamden
HAMDEN - Kohl's Department Store is one of four new businesses to open in Hamden in recent weeks. Part of a Midwestern chain of retail stores, Kohl's sells apparel and household items. Other Connecticut locations include Branford, Brookfield, Fairfield, Ridgefield, Trumbull, Wallingford and West Norwalk. The Hamden store is located on Dixwell Avenue at the site of the former Caldor's.
SNET has opened a 24-hour Operation Service Center which will provide operation services and directory assistance for telephone and cellular services. The center is expected to bring more than 600 jobs to Hamden over three year. Located at the intersection of Putnam Avenue and Leeder Hill Road, the center will operate 24 hours a day, 365 days per year.
E-Z-Form Cable Co. has moved into a 50,000-square-foot facility at 275-285 Welton Street. The company manufacturers semi-rigid cable for technology and microwave companies nationwide including AT&T, Ameritech, General Electric, Nokia, McDonnell-Douglass and others. The company, which expects to employ some 100 people, was recently recommended for tax incentives which served as the impetus for the location to Hamden.
CTC Communications has opened at 2321 Whitney Avenue. The integrated communications provider delivers converged voice, data, Internet and video solutions to medium and large business customers. The company has three offices in Connecticut, including Fairfield and East Hartford, with others soon to be open in Stamford and Danbury. CTC was recognized as one of the top 100 fastest growing U.S. technology companies by Bloomberg Personal Magazine.
BRBC: Don't Go It Alone
BRIDGEPORT - The Bridgeport Regional Business Council (BRBC) is touting Deduct-a-Ride, which allows businesses and employees to use pre-tax dollars to pay for their bus or rail transportation and parking. Changes in federal tax laws give employers the flexibility to reduce employees' commuting costs. Under the new laws, commuters can receive up to $240 per month tax-free either in lieu of or in addition to existing compensation, including up to $65 per month for transit and vanpool fares and up to $175 per month for qualified parking. Hamden Chamber Slates Diamond Jubilee
HAMDEN - The Hamden Chamber of Commerce is planning a celebration to mark its 75th anniversary. Frances Granquist and Dolores Giannini will co-chair the fete, scheduled for May 17 at 500 Blake Street Café in New Haven. Tickets to the reception and dinner are $75. Business people who have been involved with the chamber and have memorabilia, memories or photos they would like to share are asked to contact the chamber as well. All items will be returned to the owners following the celebration.
