A Farmers Market for Shelton

SHELTON - Gov. John G. Rowland announced that the state's Department of Economic & Community Development (DECD) has awarded the city of Shelton a $395,850 Small Cities grant to develop a public farmers market. The city will use the grant to construct an 800-square-foot enclosed pavilion, kiosk and public restrooms in the center of Enterprise Commerce Park. Said Rowland: “The DECD has been working closely with the city of Shelton to make the Enterprise Commerce Park a success. This project demonstrates the state's commitment to working with Connecticut's communities and to develop and enrich our local economies.'' Gavin Defends SS Numbers on Returns

HARTFORD - Connecticut Tax Commissioner Gene Gavin has responded to concerns about the printing of Social Security numbers inside this year's state income tax returns. “I cherish my privacy as much as any taxpayer,'' said Gavin. “I am confident that the security controls that are built in to the Department of Revenue Services [DRS] system can prevent unauthorized use of taxpayer information. DRS is not aware of any misuse of taxpayer information due to information that is included in tax reform booklets.'' Gavin said that the state tries to improve the tax return procedure each year. He also said that efficiency and cost effectiveness were primary goals. “The steps we have taken over the years have enabled us to do things other states find difficult,'' Gavin said. “Such as returning refund checks to taxpayers within four days, Connecticut is the fastest on the planet in that area.''
