| Peter and Robert Spodick, co-owners of York Square Cinemas, have filed suit in Connecticut Superior Court against 12 major motion picture companies. The suit charges them with violating the Connecticut Unfair Trade Practices Act by unlawfully distributing their films to Showcase Cinemas and illegally denying movies to York Square. According to the Yale Daily News, Peter Spodick alleges the three-decade monopoly of Showcase Cinemas is harmful to all local movie-goers because few have convenient access to other area theaters. Spodick said although the corporations are national, the transactions took place in Connecticut. The defendants are Buena Vista Pictures, Columbia Pictures, Dreamworks, Lion's Gate Films, MGM Studios, Miramax Films, New Line Cinema, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures, Universal, Warner Brothers and USA Films.
