Pride in Milford

MILFORD - The Milford Chamber of Commerce is asking businesses and residents to show how they feel about their city by raking their lawns, sweeping their sidewalk, planting flowers, painting a fence or just spiffing up their property. The chamber hopes that people will dig in and get the job done before April 29. That's when the chamber, along with Milford Progress and Milford Pride, are sponsoring “Pride in Milford Day.” The three organizations are asking all businesses and residents to “clean up their act” and beautify their property. School groups, clubs and associations are encouraged to participate, too. As an added incentive, people may mail a postcard to the chamber or send a fax about their plans for Pride in Milford Day and participate in a drawing for a $50 gift certificate to the Stonebridge Restaurant and a Milford Pride sweatshirt. Volunteers are needed for the clean-up, so grab your rake and work gloves and report to the Taylor Library for an assignment.

Caution For Business Computer Users

WALLINGFORD - The Better Business Bureau (BBB) has issued a list of measures to be taken to protect computer systems against would-be attackers. The first is to implement a password program so that only those authorized can get into your system. They suggest that, rather than use a simple word, pick cryptic phrases that combine numbers with upper and lowercase letters. The Better Business Bureau suggests that computer systems should require all users to change passwords when they first log on and then regularly thereafter, locking out prospective users if they fail to enter the correct password.

Viruses can cause a total loss of data, so anti-virus protection is a good investment (and don't forget to check your computer systems for viruses on a regular basis). Anti-virus programs become outdated, so keep up with the new versions. The BBB suggests installing a firewall - a gatekeeper that protect a computer network by shutting out unauthorized users and letting others access only to areas they have privileges to use. The firewall must be installed at every point where the computer system comes in contact with other networks, including the Internet, a separate local area network at a customer's site or a telephone company switch.

Among the other suggestions is to develop and enforce a company-wide computer and physical security policy and, most importantly, make sure that all employees and management are briefed regularly on security threats, policies, corrective measures and incident-reporting procedures.

Virtual Reality Golf for Branford

BRANFORD - If golf is your game and you want to play the best the country has to offer, save yourself the plane fare and head for the Upper Green Golf Center located at 658 North Branford Road. The virtual reality golf center offers four machines that allow you to play one of the Hawaii courses in the afternoon and be home for dinner. There are seven courses from around the country, all in the top 50. A foursome can play 18 holes in two and a half hours, while a single can be out in 45 minutes.

There's no cheating on these course - and no excuses. After every shot the screen shows you what you did and why, then gives you specific numbers and information. Don't be afraid to try it out if you've never played golf; a golf instructor with a separate station and computer will be happy to teach you the ins and outs (to say nothing of the ups and downs) of the ancient game Private lessons are available or group lessons as well as golf camps and schools. As for cost, one person can play 18 holes on a weekend for $22. Custom clubs can be purchased and repairs can be made by the center. In addition, the facility has a conference center.

So if you're in the mood for a brisk 18 holes, grab your clubs (the facility doesn't provide them) and head out to Augusta National or Pebble Beach by way of Branford.
